FXDX: Stop in the name of...

Having spent considerable time and effort finding out how to make my FXDX go faster, I reckoned I ought to put some thought into making it stop better.

Whilst the front brake does work, it's not exactly impressive - especially for a twin disc, 4-piston set-up.

And because I'm tight, I thought I'd start with the brake pads. As with engine modifications, lack of choice is not really an issue, with brake pads offered by Brembo, SBS and EBC to name a few.

So here's my first question - who made the OEM pads back in 2002 and who makes them now? I don't want to buy a 'different' set of pads only to find out that they're exactly what I've already got - only this time wearing the original manufacturer's brand rather than Harley's.

What I desperately need is real life information about what works best.

I need your help here! What are your experiences?

Graham, I can only tell you what I think works well in the standard calipers. After I put on the Harley floating discs and stainless steel lines I put in EBC FA400HH front and back. Works fine, stops very well etc. No idea what was in as standard in 2002 but I'm fairly sure it won't have been as good as even the standard EBCs. Pete

Many thanks for that Pete. I've just taken it over to Manchester Harley and DIDN'T enjoy it as the brake lever now comes all the way back to the bars!

So I'm going in next week to have a chat to them about it.

Will try to sound people out in the meantime.

Cheers

Graham

By the way Pete...

How far back does the brake lever come back?

Thanks

Graham

Graham,
By pure seat of the pants guess work I reckon that by the time the lever has gone through about half it's travel (say inch and a half) the front wheel would be locked solid and I'd be riding on air. With all my weedy strength I can't get it with an inch of the bars. It is very easy to get air into this particular system and a bugger to get out. Nearly used a full bottle of finest DOT 5 before it was right.

Graham,

You still out there?

Have you commenced the joyous event that is modding your FXDX? I have to say that I have stopped for the moment as it's the way I like it without spending some SERIOUS money.

But that can change.....

Pete
